English Language Arts 7th Grade

What will we be learning in Language Arts 7?

Reading-We will learn and practice skills that support the reading of  fiction, non-fiction and poetry reading. There will be opportunities for creative projects, small group work,  and independent work.  We will read nonfiction and fiction excerpts and essays.  We will also read novels and complete assignments supporting our reading comprehension and responses to texts.  Throughout this year, we will be apply our reading and thinking strategies to build our skills as good readers.

WritingWe will  explore and practice Narrative Writing, Persuasive Writing, Expository Writing, and Research  this year. Students will learn how to start with a plan, create a rough draft, and write a final draft with recursive editing and revising along the way.  Students will use all of the skills we have worked on and practiced to respond to  formal writing prompts. 

Word Study-We will study vocabulary roots, prefixes, suffixes, and their meanings. We will use roots and context clues to define words within our texts.

 

Grading Policy:    All grades will fall into one of the following categories:   

                                                                          Mastery of Content = 60% of the overall grade

                                                                          Measure of Progress = 40% of overall grade.

We will follow a 10 point grading scale.                          

90-100 = A     

80-90 =  B

70-80 =  C

60-70 = D

59 and below =   F
